Information on Repaired Kayaks

Repaired Kayak Process

Rotomolded kayaks are made of a Polyethylene plastic and are susceptible to wear and tear over years of use. Typically this damage is inflicted when the kayak is dragged across rocks, sand, pavement, and even grass. While preventative measures are the best way to avoid such damage, below are the steps taken towards a sturdy repair.

Step 1: The affected areas are sanded in order for the new material to bond fully

Step 2: A plastic welder is used to fill the void and add sacrificial material to the kayak’s keel. A similar polyethylene plastic is used in the welding process

Step 3: Peaks and ridges in the added material are sanded to match the shape of the keel. The welds are checked for air pockets and gaps. More welding and sanding is performed if necessary

Step 4: KEELEAZY keel guards are attached to the keel with an adhesive backing in order to cover the repaired areas. Once applied, the KEELEAZY is heated with a heat gun to match the shape of the kayak. This protects the new polyethylene material

Step 5: GFlex, a fast curing resin, is poured on the inside of the boat to fill any voids in the welded areas to prevent water from intruding in. Using this type of resin also adds extra strength to the keel of the kayak

It is encouraged that kayaks repaired in this fashion are watched carefully for future leaks and repaired immediately to prevent further leaking.
